Nodoka: twelve little concert etudes

Nodoka: doce pequeños estudios de concierto. Esta obra se compone de pequeñas piezas dirigidas a los niños. Son estudios porque están dirigidos a fortalecer algún aspecto de la técnica del piano; pero además, estos estudios están inspirados por la alegría de los niños. La meta de esta obra es que los pequeños pianistas aprendan disfrutando lo que tocan, aunque a veces sea un poco raro.

Son doce en homenaje a los doce Estudios op. 10 de Chopin y “pequeños” por los Pequeños preludios & fugas de J. S. Bach. En esta colección de pequeñas piezas traté de expresar una gama amplia de sentimientos; por lo que hay algunos estudios que son enérgicos, otros traviesos y juguetones. Hay desde un “Tempo di marcia” hasta una “Canción de cuna”, que por cierto es el más largo de todos… y eso es porque los niños de ahora no se duermen tan fácilmente.

Además, estos estudios exploran el piano de una forma muy peculiar. Lo que significa que tienen que de tocar algunos pasajes con un solo dedo alternado entre la mano izquierda y la derecha; en otros pasajes tienen que tocar en los extremos del piano; o tocar dos notas con un pulgar ¡a la vez!; en otro estudio casi todo el tiempo tienen que cruzar las manos; y hasta hay uno en donde tienen la oportunidad de tocar el piano 16 veces ¡con el puño!

Todos estos estudios fueron inspirados por mi alumna Nodoka Matsumura, por sus travesuras, por su dulzura y por la alegría que transmitía al tocar el piano… y también es la razón de que esta obra se llame Nodoka.

Nodoka: twelve little concert etudes.  This work consists of little pieces aimed at children. They are etudes because their objective is strengthening some aspect of piano technique; however, these etudes are also inspired by the joy of children. The goal of these works is that the little pianists learn by enjoying what they play; even if it is strange from time to time.

They are twelve in homage to the Twelve Etudes op. 10 by Chopin; and they are “little” because of the “Little preludes & fugues” by J. S. Bach. In this collection of small pieces I attempted expressing a wide range of emotions; whereby some etudes are spirited, some others are mischievous and playful. There is from a “Tempo di marcia” to a “Lullaby”, which by the way is the longest of them all… and that is because kids today don’t fall asleep so easily.

In addition, these etudes explore the piano a very peculiar way. Which means that sometimes they have to play passages with one finger alternating between right and left hand; in others they have to play in the furthest part of the piano; or they have to play two notes with one thumb at the same time! There is an etude where they have to cross hands all the time, and there is even one where they have the opportunity to play the piano 16 times with their fist!

All these etudes were inspired by my student Nodoka; by her mischiefs, by her sweetness and joy she transmitted when playing piano… and it is also the reason for this work to be called Nodoka.
